Talking Jeopardy

At one point last week I was thinking about stakes.

I hate the word stakes. No part of it makes any sense. I’m sure it somehow derives from actual wooden sticks jammed into the ground at intervals but it’s usage in writing to describe the concept of jeopardy annoys me.

Also, it’s spelled stupidly and the shape of the word is unattractive. It’s awkward like a home-schooled teenager that doesn’t understand personal space or thinks they’re capable of talking to adults when they aren’t. It’s just a bad bad word.

I’ll plumb the appropriateness of the word jeopardy another time though. Tonight’s for giving this brain the night off.
