Day 89: Five Times with Water

The dip and the stoke of the paddle in the clear mountain lake hypnotized me.  Gravel, rocks, and boulders glided beneath me.  Their refracted positions making them look magnified.  I hardly noticed as the level surface before me bent sinuously into a hole of falling water.

***

Plap, plap, plap, plap.  Wake waves splashed out a brief beat at the corner of the fishing dock.

***

We’d been talking.  I’d just said, "I’m not sure I understand anymore.  I’m not even sure I want to try to understand."  It didn’t seem like a great thing to say.  I know I wouldn’t want to hear it, but it was the truth.  The effort to understand her moods, her thoughts, and her feelings exceeded what I was willing to invest.  I thought she was going to reply.

In the past she might have said, "What the hell?" or "Brian, please think of this from my perspective." or even "You always were a lazy prick."  Instead she stared at her drink.

Water condensed on the cold glass.  A fog of humidity grew to a field of speckles.  Those coalesced into droplets.  The droplets cohered into light refracting beads that further obscured the whiskey tainted light–yes, she drank whiskey.  The combined mass of water was too much for one drop.  It ran down the glass and escaped.

"You know, you’re right."

***

The forgotten spill soaked into his sock from the carpet.  Instantly he clenched his teeth and raged inside.

***

Fr. Tom could still feel the coolness in the handle.  The metal had not fully warmed to his hand.  Any other time of the year.  Any other Mass and he’d feel solitary.  He never felt alone, that was not possible, but he never felt with his Prisoners.  When they renewed their Baptismal vows and he anointed them with three shakes of holy water from the aspergillum it shouldn’t have made him feel more connected, but it did.  Splashing near strangers in the chest and the eyes and the hair with water separates people.

***

At first I thought I could pull out ten of those, but five felt good for a first run of this exercise.

Day 88: Some Drive Time Thoughts on Solex Panels

Since I had previously announced today would be a planned outage so that I could haul the girls to Houston for Thanksgiving week I suppose I can write anything I want and it will be better than taking a pass. I cant say I am excited that in addition to finishing potty training on the first two that I still have two more behind them.

I did try to resolve some of my hang-ups with the Shanty thread that’s developing. Mostly tried to work out a few details regarding solex panels and what they exactly do. I didn’t get as much done as I normally do on a drive of this length since no one saw fit to sleep. I’ll list them below and see if I can expand textually.

Solex panels dissolve into each other when arranged in a grid. This feature highlights the animate nature of the panels and aids in characterizing the magiciness of something that would otherwise seem to be technological. I suppose the visual gag would lend itself well to film. But there might be something in there that could be exploited for the plot. Maybe a virus or an evil spell blocks panels from rejoining or being separated?

Solex panels are used to not only collect solar energy, but also magic energy from the sun(?). This energy can be used for whatever (poorly defined) but so far it came to mind that maybe this would be a resource from being able to communicate with the tech it powers. So you have a solar powered toaster the toasts the bread with the electrical energy converted, but uses the magic energy to determine things like when the toast should be made, how toasty, and other personalized toast needs. So far this thinking is lame, but maybe it pans out in other ways. Maybe the magic just goes into a pool resource that the user can access?

Ah ha. Solex panels are only able to collect minute amounts of magic and then only the crudest quality. Thus this is more of a rainwater in a barrel or recycled paper sort of thing. A way for the common person to do some little magics?

Solex sounds like solace not rhymes with Rolex. Inspired by random pronunciation quirk.

In addition to the three above rock solid worldbuilding bits, I also decided that the balloons on Johnka’s sledge would be on really long cables. I think this will give the sledge greater stability since the pendulum is longer–have to look up. And might allow it to more easily navigate through narrow passages since the cables would be much thinner than the balloons.

Then those driving range nets for villages to curb overhead flits, hangers, and sticks came to mind.

Day 87: I Lost Day 86

Just realized I lost "Day 86: Later That Morning in Lo Tom".  I wrote it in DarkRoom and apparently neglected to copy it over to 1000 Days.  It wasn’t great work.  It didn’t advance the plot over much.  In fact, it sorta tanked, devolving into one of my introspective posts on how I write and how I do it wrong sometimes.  I’m sad it’s gone though.

Briefly it reveled that Nita was waiting for Mr. Bollister.  He was characterized as round and thoughtful.  I revealed that Nita was looking for his heat signature–I didn’t word it that crudely.  I think I made her a vampire.  Once it occurred to me I had, I immediately lighted on the idea that it might be neat if in this world vampires were dependant on normal folks.  Something akin to beggars.  No idea how that might work out.

I suspect in the next day or two I’ll have to take a planned outage.  Tonight I’ll just get away with lame.
