Why Charming Venda Hates Me

As I was making breakfast and logging on this morning I was thinking I’d come back to the Green Man story I’d started last night. Now I’m not so sure.

Last night I thought some on the fact that I’ve not been able to pin down much of Charming Venda’s character or characteristics. During that thinking I dawned on me that Charming didn’t—wouldn’t if she were real—like me very much. I’m not yet sure what that means in terms of her characterization, but it gave me both a direction to pursue and a pause to pursuing it.

I don’t mean that she won’t like me much as an author after I’m done with her story, that she won’t be pleased with my slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. I mean that if she were a person she wouldn’t like me as a person. She’d be respectful and tolerant, but she wouldn’t seek out my company. She’d understand that others might befriend me, that others could love me, but she would never feel that way. Now I’ve got to figure out why she wouldn’t like me, and I’ve got to figure out who to put that into a character I would like.

A little crazy; never thought of a character in this way.

First, she’s the type of person who does what they say they’ll do, when they say they’ll do it or when they know others expect it done. She won’t appreciate my tolerance for excuses not to get things done or not to get them done in a timely manner. That would be her surface complaint.

Second, she’ll find my cussing inappropriate and excessive. She’s OK with cursing, though she doesn’t do it herself, but she’ll find my rationale for using impolite language suspect and nearly always flimsy.

My kind of anger won’t be her kind of anger. She will be righteously angry at injustice and mistreatment. She won’t understand anger which is nothing more than concentrated and vehement annoyance elevated beyond reason. Outbursts will not be her style; she’ll internalize anger and then affect changes outwardly. She’ll use her anger to fuel solutions.

OK, Doc. That’s all the shrinking I can handle for the day.

The Green Man

http://cghub.com/images/view/31678/

Miriam first met the Green Man less than a week out of her mother’s womb. Her father swaddled her in the same linen cloth he’d been brought in by his father. The flax for that linen had been grown, retted, scutched, and heckled by famous druidess [her name] when she was just a student. Now—old enough to be mated and a mother herself—she came to tell him she was the last. He would never again meet another decendent of Laux.

I was possible the Green Man already knew this. It was possible her grandfather or her father had known it and had been preparing the Green Man for the revelation for years. She didn’t think so.

Worse, she wouldn’t have time to prepare him properly before she left for Kek.

I’m forcing this and getting distracted by the research part, and I can feel a night of screwing around brewing.

Naked in Dreamland

“In this dream I kill a dragon or I just killed one. I don’t remember killing it. But I’m hanging on to a sword; stabbing it in the neck, so…” said Jessica then she shrugged. [a little setting or char description here]

“Weird. Were you happy about it?” asked Karen. [describe Karen a bit.]

“I was cold and very tired. Exhausted really. I was wearing that same outfit I wore at Halloween.”

“That Goth biker-chick with the red wig? You looked great in that.”

“Exactly. I mean yes, that one…and thanks. I had a tattoo on my neck, but the shirt was different; they matched.”

“The tattoo matched the shirt or was different?”

“Different shirt than at your party. But the design on the dream-shirt matched the dream-tattoo. Kind of. But I don’t think that mattered,” Jessica said.

“What it looked like?”

“I don’t even know how I know they matched. I don’t recall looking down at the shirt, but I know it was different than the one I wore. How I knew I had a tattoo on my neck makes no sense. Can you even look at your neck?” Jessica tucks her chin to her chest and swivels her head around trying to find out.

“True, but in dreams you just sort of know. You know?”

“I’m not even sure killing the dragon’s the weird part. Right after that I’m in some outdoor bath thing at a church talking to some guy who I think is a prince or a baron or something. Are barons the same thing as dukes?” Jessica reached for the oh-shit bar as they headed into the curvey part of 285.

“I don’t know what a duke or a baron is really. I think they’re like kings but have less land. Wait. Were you naked in this bath talking to this guy?”

“Yeah. And I was even trying to come on to him a little but he wouldn’t look. This bath was like a huge hot swimming pool. I was out floating in the middle and he was facing away watching it snow over the valley. He would not turn around at all, so I never even saw his face.”

“But he was hot I bet?” Karen tried to bring Jessica back to a lighter mood. [A mood I’ve done nothing to instill above.]

“Yeah. He was. Black hair too.”

“Well, I don’t know what that was about—especially the dragon—but even in dreamland being naked in front of a stranger is pretty daring for you.”

“I know. I know”
