Day 220: Beautiful Simplicity

I’ve just bought a game that inspires me.  I wanted to say, "Inspires my writing."  I am not sure that I can or it could, not exactly.

The premise of the game is to do one thing.  One very simple thing.  My four year old loves it and the almost three year old plays it well enough, but likes Daddy to do it because I’m better at it and it’s therefore more fun to watch.  The point is it’s simple.  They spice it up with variety of play and a timer, but I’d happily play without different zones or even a ticking clock to beat.

It’s worth thinking about how to adapt such simplicity to writing.

My first reaction is that you probably can’t.  There is structure and purpose in the language that begat the words that in turn build a story.  But I wouldn’t have thought the simplification employed by this game would create game play that competes with much more complex and involved games.

Day 119: Armburster

Test pilot, Dennis Armburster, surveyed the latest XO he was about to review.  It looked great.  Dusted black with menacing angles.  The anterior skewed hypermasculine with a snake scale motif.  Gear mounts were rigged for flexibility but favored the favorable lateral lines.  The the upper posterior sported fins–first he’d seen in his lengthy career.  Made it look like [one of those religious paintings] except unholy.  This suit looked like it could fuck you up.  Which means it couldn’t.

"Doc."

"Arm, I know what you’re thinking.  It’s what I first thought too.  Suit up and be wrong for the first time."

Day 118: A Phantom of an Erased Life

In speaking to a friend last night about 1000 Days I discovered something about what I am doing here.  Unfortunately in the light of morning I no longer recall that epiphany.  My inclination is to determine that such forgettable conversations hold no true value.  However, I can’t escape the feeling that some time traveler tampered with my flow in the stream, my recollection of the epiphany merely a phantom of that erased life-thread.

I’d hoped that writing about it would assist in removing the flimsy veil I know stand between us.  It has not.
